FERRY SERVICE

MAINLAND - GRAND MANAN FERRY

While there is a small airport on the island for chartered flights, most islanders and visitors use the Coastal Transport Service between Black's Harbour on the New Brunswick mainland and North Head on Grand Manan.

The ferry runs daily (except for December 25 and January 1). In the summer months when more runs are added, the primary ferry, the MV "Grand Manan Adventure ", is augmented with the MV "Grand Manan V ". The crossing is approximately one and half hours - and there is an onboard restaurant with seating, as well as a number of comfortable lounges and external decks accessible to passengers.

It is best to arrive at 1 - 1.5 hours in advance at Black's Harbour -You can now make reservations from both Blacks Harbour and from the Grand Manan terminal. If you have reservations, you must arrive 45 minutes before the ferry leaves - or the reservation is lost.

It is a toll service. However, fares are only collected on the return trip, from Grand Manan to Black's Harbour. Rates depend on the size of the vehicle and the number of passengers. For accurate schedules and fare rates, check the Coastal Transport Ltd. website - and to make reservations online,

Advance tickets may be purchased from Coastal Transport Ltd. beginning at 7:30 AM for all crossings from Grand Manan to Blacks Harbour that day or the following day.  Advance tickets for the crossings leaving Grand Manan are strongly recommended. These may be purchased in person or over the telephone - (506) 662-3724 - with VISA, MasterCard, American Express. Debit cards can also be used at the ticket office. The service otherwise is first come first served, but restrictions apply during the transportation of dangerous goods.

GRAND MANAN - WHITE HEAD ISLAND FERRY

White Head Island is accessible several times a day from Grand Manan Island at Ingalls Head on the MV "William Frankland ".

The crossing - approximately 20 - 30 minutes - is free of charge. As with the main Ferry, it does not run on Christmas and New Year's Day.

It is recommended that you arrive one half an hour before departure. Service is on a first come basis, although priority is given to perishable goods.

Either ferry can cancel runs because of weather conditions which might create a dangerous passage. Call ahead if the weather is bad.

Ingall's Head Terminal, Grand Manan to White Head Island Terminal
A pamphlet with schedules for both services is available at the main Ferry terminals at Black's Harbour and on Grand Manan, as well as online: for Grand Manan, for White Head Island. Both islands are now served by brand new - and much larger - ferries. The Grand Manan Adventure's maiden voyage was in August 2011; the William Frankland's was in October 2011.
